Four Seasons Maui

Maile Suite

Photography by Joseph Weaver

Born from its Polynesian roots, a melding of cultures, and a connection to the land, Hawaiian design has developed a grounded architectural language. The typical Hawaiian home features open-air, communal living, and abundant natural materials. Retaining the charm of these elements, the Four Seasons Maui was modeled after a traditional Hawaiian village, and the three-bedroom Maile Suite gives guests the chance to experience a contemporary expression of island living anchored in art and design led by the interior design company Meyer Davis.

The Four Seasons brought in the Saatchi Art Hospitality Art Advisors, led by Rebecca Wilson, Chief Curator and VP of Art Advisory, to curate a mix of painting, photography, and sculpture that ground the Maile Suite in the sights and stories of local life. Their first step was finding local artists whose works reflect the realities of life on Maui and pay homage to its roots and beauty. In turn, themes of nature, identity, and environmental stewardship underlie the collection.

Textile and fiber arts match the Hawaiian energy in a sitting room at the Four Seasons Maui suites.

Because artisan practice is deeply embedded in Hawaiian life, the team looked to traditions of weaving, carving, and storytelling. In the King Bedroom, textile artist Pam Peterson’s cape-shaped flax wall hanging recalls traditional Hawaiian garments, while a handwoven lauhala fan by Tiare Kanahele nods to domestic craft. In the Master Bedroom, a standout carved wood bas relief by Ruben Aira honors Hawaii’s native flora and fauna, connecting the suite to its surroundings.

Ceramic wall sculptures by Cathy Savels conjure ocean currents and the blooming white lotus—a flower that grows locally each spring and holds spiritual significance across cultures. The lotus is a visual thread throughout the suite, appearing in Melissa Chimera’s pattern-dense painting and Saatchi Art artist Sean Yoro’s portrait of a local man adorned with the flower. Its recurrence nods not only to local flora but to the celebrity of Hawaii, referencing The White Lotus series, filmed on-site at the resort and Maui’s role as muse.

The collection feels personal and expansive through its layering of place-based materials, local voices, and ancestral techniques. Comprising custom and original pieces, the art tells the stories of Maui’s horizons, hands, and histories, making the Maile Suite an immersive extension of the island itself.
